Cologne Carnival tips for visitors: how to find each other in the crowds

At Cologne Carnival you lose your friends faster than almost anywhere else: the streets are packed, nearly everyone is in fancy dress, and in the busiest areas messages often don’t get through. These Cologne Carnival tips for visitors help your group stay together from 11 November to Shrove Tuesday. The essentials: a meeting point with a time, something your group can be recognised by, and a plan for the moment the network goes down.

When is Cologne Carnival 2027?

The carnival season opens every year on 11 November. The street carnival, the part most visitors come for, runs for six days: from Weiberfastnacht on the Thursday to the night before Ash Wednesday. These are the dates for the 2026/2027 season:

Cologne Carnival for first-time visitors: what do the words mean?

You’ll hear a few words of Kölsch, the local dialect, everywhere. Knowing them makes the day easier:

Alaaf
The carnival cheer in Cologne. You’ll hear it all day.
Jecken
Carnival revellers, in other words everyone in fancy dress.
Zoch
A parade. The Rosenmontagszoch is the Rose Monday parade.
Kamelle and Strüßjer
Sweets and small bunches of flowers thrown from the floats.
Veedel
A neighbourhood. The Veedelszöch are the neighbourhood parades on Carnival Sunday.

Why is it so easy to lose each other at carnival?

Three things come together. First, in packed streets a few metres are enough and someone is out of sight. Second, costumes make people look alike. Twenty clowns, fifty cows, and your friend is one of them. Third, a huge number of phones in a small area share the same mobile masts. Messages then arrive late or not at all, and a shared location gets stuck on an old position.

On top of that, there are closures. In popular areas such as the Zülpicher Viertel, the city closes access points when it gets too full, and along the Rose Monday route there are areas whose entrances are closed when too many people arrive. If you step out for a moment, you may not get straight back to your group.

10 Cologne Carnival tips: how do you find each other again?

  1. Agree on a meeting point in advance. Choose a spot nobody can mistake that stays reachable even with closures, for example a particular doorway in a side street. “At the cathedral” or “on the Heumarkt” is far too vague: thousands of people will be standing there.
  2. Agree on a time rule. For example: anyone who gets lost goes to the meeting point on the hour and waits there for 15 minutes. This rule works without any signal at all.
  3. Have a plan B. If the first meeting point is closed or too crowded, the second one applies. Ideally it’s a few streets away, where it’s quieter.
  4. Wear something recognisable. The same colour, the same hat or something that sticks up above people’s heads. Ideas further down under group costumes.
  5. Take a group photo in the morning. In costume, head to toe. If someone goes missing, you can show stewards, the police or other revellers who you’re looking for.
  6. Share your live location before you set off, and test it. Whether it’s WhatsApp, Apple Find My or a group app: check at your accommodation that everyone can see everyone else. How it works is in the guide find friends at a festival.
  7. Carry two phone numbers and your accommodation’s address on paper. If your phone is dead or lost, you can borrow one, but only if you know a number.
  8. Never go off alone. Anyone who needs the toilet or something to eat goes in pairs. In twos you lose each other less often, and whoever comes back knows where the rest are.
  9. Sort out the way home in advance. Which stop, which train, who travels with whom? On carnival days some stops may be closed and trams and trains may run differently.
  10. Whoever waits stays put. Only one person searches. Whoever is at the meeting point stays there, even if it takes a while. Two people searching almost never find each other in a crowd.

Rule of thumb: meeting point, time, plan B. And whoever waits stays put.

Where should you meet at Cologne Carnival?

A good meeting point is unmistakable, slightly out of the way, and stays reachable when streets are closed. A bad one is a big square, a famous building or a stop where everyone is standing anyway.

Works wellBetter avoid
A particular doorway with a house number in a side street“At the cathedral”, “on the Heumarkt”, “at the station”
A shop or café everyone knows, one street away from the crowdsA square right on the parade route
A corner with a fixed feature, such as a fountain or a striking signA place only one person in the group knows

Walk to the meeting point together at the start so everyone knows what it looks like. A photo of it in the group chat helps anyone who joins later. Don’t pick a meeting point inside the security zones along the parade route described by the Festkomitee (in German): their entrances are closed when too many people turn up.

Which group costumes stand out in the crowd?

The best group costume can be recognised from behind and from far away. A theme alone isn’t enough if a hundred other groups had the same idea.

  • One bold colour for everyone, worn up top. Hats, wigs and beanies stand out in a crowd, trousers and shoes don’t.
  • Something that sticks up above people’s heads. A tall hat, a headband with antennae or something inflatable on your head. Make sure you don’t block anyone’s view or hit anyone.
  • Light for the evening. Glow sticks, small fairy lights on your costume or light-up headbands. In February it gets dark early.
  • A group idea where gaps show. A deck of cards with one card per person, the planets of the solar system, a fruit bowl. If someone is missing, you notice straight away.
  • Warm layers underneath. Plan layers under your costume. Whoever gets cold leaves early, and then the whole group is searching.

How do you make your phone battery last all carnival day?

A long day, the cold, lots of photos and a weak network all drain your battery. Apple designs the iPhone for ambient temperatures between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius and says that very cold conditions can temporarily shorten battery life (Apple support note).

  • Keep your phone in an inside pocket close to your body, not on the outside of your costume.
  • Bring a charged power bank and a short cable, at least one for every two people.
  • Turn on Low Power Mode early, not at 10 per cent.
  • Turn the brightness down and film sparingly. With a weak network your phone keeps searching for signal, which uses extra power.

What can you do when the network is overloaded at carnival?

Expect messages to arrive late in the busiest areas. It’s not your phone: a huge number of people are calling, messaging and filming in a small area at the same time.

  • Send short texts, not photos. Short text messages are more likely to get through than photos, videos or voice notes.
  • Check the time on a shared location. With a bad network, a shared location often shows the last known position, which may already be half an hour old.
  • Don’t search at random. Go to the agreed meeting point at the agreed time.
  • Describe where you are with fixed features. House number, shop, street sign. “By the clowns” helps nobody.
  • Step away from the crowds. A few streets further on, messages often start getting through again.

In an emergency in Germany: 112 for ambulance and fire service, 110 for the police. You can always speak to stewards, paramedics and police officers on site.

Cologne Carnival with children: how do you avoid losing each other?

  • Put a note with your phone number in your child’s costume pocket or use a wristband with your number.
  • Give your child a bright hat or colour you can recognise from a distance, and take a photo of it in the morning.
  • Agree in advance what happens if you get separated: stand still and tell a steward, a police officer or a family with children.
  • Along the parade route, keep your distance from the floats, even when sweets are flying. Children stay behind the barrier.
  • Plan breaks a few streets away from the parade route, where it’s quieter.

Which app helps you find your group at carnival?

Sharing your live location with WhatsApp, Apple Find My or Google Maps helps as long as the network holds up. A group app like Crewbeam is built for crews: an arrow shows you the direction to your people and how far away they are, and you set meeting points with a time, which the app reminds you about. You can save your meeting point as a place, and the arrow will lead you there even without signal.

To be honest: every app needs a connection to show the others’ current position. That’s why the meeting plan on paper stays your plan B. Crewbeam is free, has no ads and is coming soon to the App Store, for iPhone first.
