Find friends at a festival: 9 tips that actually work
At a big festival you can lose your friends in seconds: the crowds, the loud music and a mobile network that can’t keep up. The most reliable way to find friends at a festival is a fixed meeting point, a shared live location and a plan B for when the signal drops.
Why is it so easy to lose your friends at a festival?
Thousands of people stand close together, your phone is in your pocket, and the group splits up because one person needs the toilet and another wants a drink. On a packed festival site, messages often arrive late or not at all. If you rely on WhatsApp alone, you can end up searching for a long time.
How do you find friends at a festival? 9 tips
- Agree on a meeting point in advance. Pick a spot nobody can mistake: a Ferris wheel, a particular stage entrance, a water point. “At the entrance” isn’t enough, because there are usually several.
- Add a time to it. “If we lose each other, we meet at the Ferris wheel at 10pm.” Without a time, everyone waits at a different moment.
- Share your live location with the group. You can do this with WhatsApp, Apple Find My or Google Maps (compared below). That way you see on the map where the others are.
- Test it before you go. Check at home or at the campsite that everyone can see everyone else. Once you’re on site, there’s no time for that.
- Save your battery. Sharing your location in the background uses power. Bring a power bank, at least one per group.
- Have a plan B for no signal. If messages won’t go through, the meeting point from tip 1 applies. Whoever is waiting stays put and doesn’t wander off.
- Bring something people can spot. A flag on a pole, a balloon or a striking hat can be seen from far away. Ideas for group costumes that stand out are in our Cologne Carnival tips.
- Describe landmarks, not directions. “I’m next to the stall with the red roof” helps far more than “front right”.
- Don’t head off alone. In twos or threes you lose each other less often, and if you do end up on your own, you always have someone to head back to.
How to share your location with friends: WhatsApp, Apple, Google and a festival app compared
| Option | How it works | Pros | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp live location | In a chat, tap “+” (iPhone) or the paperclip (Android), then “Location”, then “Share live location” and choose how long: 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours. WhatsApp help page | Everyone already has it. | Just a map, one chat at a time, and you have to restart it after 8 hours at most. |
| Apple Find My | Open the Find My app, tap “People”, then “Share My Location”. Apple support guide | No messenger needed, built into the phone. | Apple devices only. |
| Google Maps | Tap your profile picture, then “Location sharing”, choose people and how long, including “Until you turn this off”. Google Maps help page | Works on Android and iPhone. | Needs a Google account. |
| A festival app like Crewbeam | Start a crew, others join with a QR code or a link. | An arrow instead of a map, plus tents, places and meeting points for the whole crew. | Everyone needs to install the app. |
Stop sharing your location after the festival. Otherwise all of these options keep showing where you are.
When is a festival app worth it for your crew?
A messenger is fine for one evening with three people. If you’re staying for several days, have a tent to find again and a bigger group, dedicated features help: an arrow that shows the direction at a glance, saved places such as the stage, the bar and the toilets, and meeting points the app reminds you about in good time.
That’s exactly what Crewbeam is for: an arrow shows you where your friends are and guides you back to your tent. Crewbeam is free and has no ads. It’s for iPhone first and is coming soon to the App Store.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my friends at a big festival?
Agree on a fixed meeting point with a time beforehand and share your live location in the group. The meeting point is your plan B if the signal drops.
Does location sharing work at a festival without signal?
No, the others’ current position needs mobile data or Wi-Fi. Without a connection, only the agreed meeting point and time will help. In Crewbeam, your tent and saved places also work without signal.
How long can I share my live location on WhatsApp?
You can choose 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours. After that you have to start sharing again.
Is there an alternative to Zenly?
Zenly shut down in 2023. For everyday use there’s Apple Find My, Google Maps and WhatsApp live location. For festivals with a tent, meeting points and a crew, there are apps like Crewbeam. Important: everyone in the group has to use the same option.
Can strangers see my location?
Only the people you share it with. Check who is in the group and stop sharing after the festival.
